TSW Funding Announcement

Government of Canada Announces $270 Million for Capital Works in the Trent-Severn Waterway (TSW) including in the Reservoir Area

On Sunday June 26th the Government announced $270 Million in project funding for the repair, rehabilitation and replacement of Capital works in the TSW including projects in the reservoir area. CEWF was represented at the announcement by our CEWF Chair and by another member of our Executive Committee. To view the full announcement and backgrounder – click here.

Project funding identified in the reservoir area includes funding for six reservoir dams which will either undergo major rehabilitation or replacement; one major new rehabilitation project; and supplementary funding for the previously announced projects at Mississagua and Horseshoe Lakes which are now both  Dam replacement projects, and for the rehabilitation work at Coboconk; as well as supplementary funding for the ongoing concrete repairs at 17 dams in the Haliburton Sector.

In the canal sectors CEWF particularly notes and welcomes the substantial funding allocated for the replacement of Dam 1 at Trenton and other major dams along the Trent River. It is our understanding that eliminating leakage from these dams will afford the TSW greater flexibility for managing minimum flows during periods of drought with possible benefits for water conservation throughout the system including in the reservoirs.

The specific projects announced in the reservoir area include the following:

$3M for the rehabilitation or replacement of the Twelve Mile Lake Dam

$3.3M for the rehabilitation or replacement of the Long Lake Dam

$8M for the rehabilitation or replacement of the Elliot Falls Dam

$3.3M for the rehabilitation or replacement of the Esson Lake dam

$3M for the rehabilitation or replacement of the Canning Lake Dam

$4.5M for the rehabilitation or replacement of the Red Pine Dam

$900k for the rehabilitation of the Kushog Lake Dam

$3.5M additional for rehabilitation of the Coboconk Dam (total $4.7M)

$2.4M additional for Concrete Repair work at 17 sites in the Haliburton Sector (Total $13M)
