Trent Severn Waterway – High water levels and flows close part of the system

-CEWF-

What this could mean for the reservoir lakes:

With hazardously high water levels we can expect that the water management strategy will be to keep as much water in the reservoirs as possible until they can normalize the flows downstream. Lakes that are over their high water norms can be expected to stay high, and those that are not quite there yet will continue to fill/rise. It is highly likely that in the coming days, we will receive an official water management update so stay tuned. With a major rain event in the forecast for later this week, the TSW will be working hard to pass the water as safely and as quickly as nature will allow.

TRENT-SEVERN WATERWAY ANNOUNCES PARTIAL CLOSURE DUE TO HIGH WATER LEVELS AND FLOWS

PETERBOROUGH, ON – May 24, 2025 – Due to high water levels and flows, Parks Canada will begin a partial closure of navigation starting this Monday, May 26, 2025, until further notice in the interest of public safety.

Over the past 7 days the Trent-Severn’s watersheds have received significant amounts of precipitation and is forecasted to receive more in the coming days, bringing water levels well above normal navigational levels. Residents and visitors should exercise extreme caution around and on the water.

As of Monday, May 26, 2025, Lock 1 – Trenton through to Lock 18 – Hastings will be closed to navigation. This section of the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site may be closed earlier if all moving vessels have safely exited this part of the system.

As of Saturday, May 24, 2025, residents and boaters from Young’s Point to Peterborough, and from Lake Simcoe to Georgian Bay can expect increased flows outside of navigation hours until further notice. The increased flows overnight are the result of water management dam adjustments to address the higher-than-normal water levels caused by the recent precipitation. The public should consider these overnight flows as non-navigable.

This partial closure will protect boater safety and help to prevent shoreline erosion and property damage experienced by local residents and businesses. All boaters are strongly encouraged to lower their speeds and watch their wake.

Parks Canada will continue to work diligently to re-open the entire system for navigation as soon as it safe to do so. Updates will be provided regularly and communicated widely.
