The Trent-Severn Waterway was built after the War of 1813 to create a secure, alternative water route between Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay for military and commercial purposes. It opened up central Ontario for settlement, lumbering, agriculture, and trade, but its construction took some 87 years from 1833 to 1920.
